Am I Obese?
A healthy weight is dependent upon your height, so the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have defined obesity as having a BMI, or body-mass index, of 30 or greater. Someone is usually considered to be obese if their weight is greater than 20 percent of the outside range of healthy weight for their sex and height.
What Are the Symptoms?
There is a clear negative relationship between obesity and health. People who are obese may experience joint pain, shortness of breath, and limited energy. They may also be at greater risk for Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, stroke, cancer, sleep apnea, infertility, arthritis, gallbladder disease, and fatty liver disease.
What Causes Obesity?
While there may be a genetic component to obesity, often the culprit is an unbalanced diet with too many saturated or trans fats, carbs, and sugars, combined with a lack of sufficient exercise. We can work with you to help you learn how to eat healthily and curb overeating, as well as to find an exercise plan that works for you.
Diagnosing Obesity
We can calculate your BMI by taking height and weight measurements and use this to determine if you are obese. We can also perform other diagnostic tests to see if you have or are at high-risk for other obesity-related conditions like diabetes or hypertension.
How Is Obesity Treated?
While we can prescribe medications to manage the symptoms of obesity, weight loss is critical to treating obesity and maintaining good health. If you are struggling with a weight problem, Esslinger Medical and Aesthetics can help. We can put you on a weight loss program that is tailored to your specific needs and monitor your progress to help you maintain it.
