What Are Migraines?
Migraines are a neurological condition characterized by massive head pain, light, and sound sensitivity. This pain is often so debilitating that sufferers cannot function until it passes.
What Are the Different Types?
There are two commonly understood types of migraines:
- With Aura – Or classic migraines, which have a warning “aura” before the migraine comes on.
- Without Aura – Which are more common, which come on suddenly.
What Are the Symptoms?
The most notable migraine symptom is an intense, debilitating headache. Other symptoms besides headaches include light and sound sensitivity, tingling and numbness, and nausea and vomiting. Both types may have a prodrome stage, which occurs a day or two before the migraine and may include symptoms like neck stiffness, yawning, fatigue, depression, irritability, hyperactivity, or increased appetite. The “aura” immediately precedes the migraine attack and may be characterized by a prickling or tingling sensation, light flashes, and difficulty with seeing and speaking. They usually last about four hours.
What Are the Causes?
Migraines are thought to have a genetic component, but can also be caused by certain triggers, like bright lights, certain foods, hormones, stress, or by brain damage.
Diagnosing Migraines
Doctor Esslinger will listen to your symptoms to determine if you are likely suffering from migraines. He may also order a CT scan or MRI to rule out brain damage.
How Are Migraines Treated?
If you are suffering from a migraine, the best thing to do is lie down in a quiet, dark room with a cold compress over your head or behind your neck. Temple massage can also help. Take analgesic medication if you find this to be helpful. The doctor may be able to prescribe a medication that will help with the pain, and will likely attempt to learn what triggers your migraines and help you avoid that trigger.
