What Is a Physical?

Physicals are sort of like a car tune-up for your body. The doctor examines you to test bodily functions like your breathing, reflexes, and blood pressure. He may schedule additional diagnostic tests to learn information that cannot be gathered through a standard examination.

What Types of Physicals Are There?

Most people are encouraged to come in for at least an annual physical examination just to make sure all their systems are working correctly and to catch any potential problems before they become serious. However, there may be certain life situations in which one is required to submit to a physical, such as:

  • Work Physical – To determine fitness for a certain job.
  • Sports Physical – To determine fitness to participate in an organized sport.
  • School Physical – To make sure a child is healthy enough to attend school, including making sure they have had their proper vaccinations.

As an Internist, Dr. Esslinger can perform a work or sports physical but not a school physical, for which you should consult your pediatrician.

How Does a Physical Work?

You will be asked to fill out some information about yourself to give the team a chance to get to know your physical condition. A staff member will then take some vital statistics, such as blood pressure, height, and weight. The doctor will then interview you to learn about any ailments or symptoms you may be experiencing, followed by the actual physical examination, which may involve looking at and into certain parts of your body, listening to your heart and feeling certain areas to detect abnormalities. He may recommend inoculations and may call for blood or urine tests or X-rays to gather more information.

What Are the Benefits of a Physical?

A physical gives the doctor an opportunity to identify areas where you could be taking better care of your health and provide you with ways to improve in those areas. It is also a good way to identify more serious potential problems before they become symptomatic and harder to treat.
