What Is Cellulite?
If you have it, you know it. Cellulite is skin, usually on your legs or thighs, that looks dimpled and lumpy. It is the result of excess fat pushing against the muscle and connective tissue to create a dimpling effect. Because women’s connective tissue in these areas is laid out differently, they are much more prone to this effect. Unfortunately, once you have it, even weight loss and exercising the area may not have a significant effect.

Leg cellulite is probably the most common complaint when it comes to this aesthetic concern, but it can appear in other areas, including the thighs, buttocks, arms, and stomach.
What Are the Causes?
In women, fat cells and connective tissue are arranged in the subdermal layer in a vertical fashion. When fat cells expand, they are much more likely to protrude up into the outer layer of skin, creating the dimpling known as cellulite. A man’s subdermal layer is laid out in more of a criss-cross fashion, so dimpling is less likely, though not impossible.
